Dermatology is the medical specialty that is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the skin, hair, nails and mucous membranes. A dermatologist is a medical specialist (minimum 12 year university training) that you should consult if you have any problem with your skin. The skin is the largest and most visible organ of the body. It reflects the health of the body and acts as a barrier against injury and the environment. Unfortunately, at one time or another, nearly everyone has some type of skin disease - infants, children, teenagers, adults and the elderly. Common skin disorders include: cancer, benign growths, warts, fungal infections, eczema, psoriasis, acne, vitiligo, skin conditions associated with systemic disease, viral infections such as herpes and many more.
Skin cancer is the most common cancer in South Africa with about 20 000 reported cases every year and 700 deaths. South Africa has the second highest incidence of skin cancer in the world after Australia. Many organisations in South Africa are encouraging the general population to consult a medical professional with their suspicious pigmented lesions for a formal diagnosis. Unfortunately, due to limited training in this area at undergraduate level, many doctors often do not feel confident to evaluate, diagnose and manage skin lesions and these patients should consult a dermatologist for an opinion, cancer screening and mole mapping if needed.
